In February, Claire Daunas, Information Researcher, GrantFinder attended The Gathering 2025, Scotland’s largest third-sector event, hosted by the Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations (SCVO). The event facilitated crucial discussions on the challenges and opportunities facing the third sector, including government funding, volunteer engagement, and financial sustainability.

Navigating a shifting funding landscape

Discussions highlighted the need for fair funding, the impact of rising costs, and a decline in volunteer numbers. In response, the Scottish Government announced a £60 million pilot for multi-year funding between 2025/26 and 2027/28, targeting health, education, poverty, and culture. First Minister John Swinney emphasised a commitment to long-term funding solutions, with further clarity expected from the UK Government’s spending review in June 2025.

How charitable funders are responding

With applications surging, funders such as The National Lottery Community Fund (NLCF) and Robertson Trust are refining their funding models. New programmes like NLCF’s Community Action and Fairer Life Chances aim to support evolving sector needs.

Collaboration as a solution

Experts stressed multi-agency collaboration in tackling systemic challenges like poverty and healthcare.
